(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman needs advanced research and technology to fight cancer said Yuthar al Rawahy founder and chairperson of Oman Cancer Association (OCA).
"We not only need more research in the country to find out about the cause leading to rise in cancer among young girls and women but also need advanced technology like proton therapy and PET scan so that people do not have to travel abroad for such treatments" she said.
Yuthar said "Of the total cancer cases reported in 2011 more than 1187 were found to be Omanis and of these 87 (7.3 per cent) were found to be children aged 14 years and below."
She was speaking at the 'Hug a Bear' event organised by OCA in collaboration with The Royal Hospital's Oncology Centre and Dar al Hanan recently for more than 30 children and their families. She added "We would like to thank the hospital authorities for conducting such activities for children with cancer. We need to build a proper building and not just a house as at present we cannot accommodate more than 16 families at one go. We need increased collaboration from the community to raise funds and to check symptoms and be responsive."
The event was held as part of the two-day awareness initiative 'Health Reminder Campaign for Saving Hands' to mark World Cancer Day.
