PM stresses institutional effort against electricity grid violations

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour discussed the measures implemented by electricity distribution companies in dealing with violations in this sector, following a meeting held in late September.

Presiding over a cabinet meeting Saturday, Ensour stressed the importance of tackling common assaults and violations against the electricity grid to reduce power losses, in addition to action against anyone availing of electricity in an illicit way.

Ensour added that there is a need to tackle such violations which pose a challenge to the state prestige and cause a loss to the national exchequer. The premier assured that while technical losses in power distribution is a phenomenon existing all over the world, the volume of such losses was high in Jordan.

The premier assured that progress was being made in many sectors to safeguard the state prestige, including the progress in ending misuse and violations when it comes to water usage, "But the situation in the field of electricity still needed to be addressed because state prestige is indivisible." He pointed that security bodies comprising public security and gendarmerie are ready to cooperate with electricity companies' teams to confront anyone breaching the law and thus help in stopping any assaults on electricity grids.

Ensour said, ''We have not noticed any progress in dealing with electricity related assaults. All procedures and sanctions will apply against (such) individuals and companies in accordance with law (if they are found in violation)." The electricity companies' directors noted that smart meters were the best solution to determine the losses on any network or determine any case of tampering with the meters, noting that these meters have counters that can be read and the power can be disconnected centrally.

They added that a consulting firm is conducting a study regarding the feasibility of installing these meters, though the financial cost involved in this operation is a challenge as there are about two million subscribers. Therefore, authorities may decide to move ahead in a phased manner.
