06 February 2015: Shadow environment minister Barry Gardiner has appeared on the Channel Four programme 'Dispatches' and admitted that his party made the wrong decision by encouraging motorists to buy diesel. Under the Labour government car-tax rates for diesel-powered vehicles were made cheaper than petrol models in the belief that diesel emissions were cleaner and greener.
Mr Gardiner claimed that his party did not at the time have the information now revealed - that in fact diesel engines emit far more dangerous particulates than their petrol counterparts. These emissions are believed to contribute to a number of health problems including cancer heart disease and strokes.
Diesel-car owners are now finding themselves penalised through higher residents' parking charges in some areas and higher congestion charges. London mayor Boris Johnson has even proposed a new scrappage scheme for older diesel cars.
However it's not the end of the road for diesel cars yet as modern diesel engines are considerably cleaner and more sophisticated than older models. Nonetheless record low prices at the pumps are making petrol-fuelled cars even more attractive to motorists.
