Australia's retail sales up 0.2 percent in December


(MENAFN) New figures released showed that Australia's retail sales expanded by merely 0.2 percent in December as consumers kept their savings from cheaper fuel, Xinhua reported.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the seasonally adjusted growth was below expectations at 0.3 percent, but still better that the 0.1 percent rise registered in November.

Sales of clothes, footwear and accessories increased 2.7 percent, food edged up 0.3 percent and furniture gained 0.7 percent. Meanwhile, electronics sales dropped 1.5 percent.

Hardware, building and garden supplies sales fell 3.4 percent, spending in department stores dropped 1 percent, while sales of household goods went down 0.4 percent.
