Remember what happened to 'clean' Rajiv Gandhi

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) In the last leg of campaigning for Delhi election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lost no time in hitting out at AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal over allegations of dubious funding. Using former PM Rajiv Gandhi as a prop for his salvo at Kejriwal, Modi said, "Please remember why Rajiv Gandhi met such a fate. He always used to project himself as Mr Clean and when country saw that he was corrupt, people did not forgive him. Kale dhan ki charcha to ho rahi hai desh mein" adhi kali raat mein kale dhan ke kale karnaame, yeh to desh ne pehli baar dekhe hai. (People are talking about black money but this is the first time that people are witnessing black money transactions at midnight)."

Addressing a rally in Rohini on Tuesday, Modi cited several incidents to establish a similarity between the Congress and the AAP. The PM said, "Those who claim to have all the details of Swiss bank account holders, don't know where the black money came from. This country does not forgive cheating."

Modi compared the 15 years of "destruction" of Delhi by the Congress to one year of "destruction" by the AAP.

He called the AAP a "temporary party whose power to destroy is much less than that of the Congress, which is an old party that has ruled for 125 years".

Targeting the AAP's vote bank, Modi said, "There are people who perform drama on poverty. I have seen poverty since my childhood. Who will understand poverty more than me?"

Modi, however, acknowledged that winning Delhi is a tough task. The "bhagirath" task that I have taken upon myself is to make Delhi a capital that Indians would feel proud of in front of the world," he said.

Laying a claim on freedom fighters Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shashtri and Morarji Desai, Modi put himself in their league. "They too were targeted by the 'elites'," he said, before adding that the elite could not bear that "someone like him" has thrown them out of power.

The PM said the AAP was painting the BJP as a party of dacoits and thieves.

"See the shamelessness. Now, when people ask them (AAP) why they took support from the Congress, they say humne manga nahi tha unhone diya tha. Then people ask them why fly in a charter plane and in Business Class, they say humne manga nahi tha unhone diya tha. When people ask about funds, they reply, humne manga nahi tha," he said while urging people to vote for the BJP.
