This opening day of four overall is a sprint stage, with 128 cyclists from 16 teams riding along the 145km route from the start line at DIMC Mena Seyahi to the finish beside the Union Flag on Jumeirah Beach Road.

Leading names in the world of cycling, like Mark Cavendish and Vincenzo Nibali, are competing in this second edition of the race.

Cavendish is expected to feature prominently in the three sprint stages today, February 5 and on Saturday, while Nibali is better suited to the medium mountain stage to Hatta Dam on Friday.

The Dubai Tour champion from last year, Taylor Phinney of the USA, hasn't returned to defend his title here as the BMC Racing star continues his recovery from a broken left leg from back in May.

"I'm sorry I cannot be there for the second edition of the Dubai Tour," Phinney said from his training camp in Colorado.

'I was humbled and honoured to win the first edition, but € unfortunately € I'm still recovering from a broken leg. I should be back in a couple of months and I'm definitely excited to get back, but I'm sorry I'm not there. I wish everybody the best of luck,' he added.
