Alstom's USD104m assets ordered frozen in Brazil

(MENAFN) A Brazilian court has ordered the freezing of more than USD104 million in assets of French energy and transportation company Alstom as part of a corruption probe, AFP reported.

The court's order was issued in response to a corruption case in 1998. The investigation seeks to prove that the firm made under the tale payments to officials to win a no-bid energy contract.

The contract under investigation was for building power plants in the late 1990s. Alstom previously admitted that some of its employees paid bribes for contracts in the Bahamas, Egypt, Indonesia and Taiwan.

"The unethical action continues because it involves a case of corruption of extreme gravity in which in return for a contract bribes involving passive and active corruption," Sao Paulo prosecutor said.
