UAE- Sharjah cuts power supply to 3604 bachelors flats

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Municipality says tenancy-related violations decreased by 70 per cent in 2014 as compared to 2013 as awareness drives give result.

Sharjah — The Sharjah Municipality in 2014 disconnected electricity supply to 3604 flats occupied by bachelors after they failed to respond to the civic body’s warnings about tenancy-related violations. The municipality also warned occupants of 6854 flats for failure to abide by conditions and rules stipulated in their leasing contracts.

Khalifah Al Suawaidi Head of Housing and Tenancy Regulatory Department at the municipality said tenancy-related violations decreased by 70 per cent in 2014 as compared to 2013. He attributed this decrease to the civic body’s efforts in spreading awareness about the tenancy law in the emirate.

He explained that the municipality issues orders for disconnection of electricity supply only after three warnings are issued.

The municipality is all set to launch an awareness campaign to educate the public about the tenancy law and tenants’ rights. The campaign will spread information via the traditional media social media and distribution of pamphlets.

He stressed that the municipality is carrying out regular inspection visits to residential areas as a preventive measure against bachelors occupying flats in residential areas.

The municipality slaps fines ranging from Dh300 to Dh500 for tenancy-related violations. The fine is doubled if the violation is repeated. “When we say bachelors we only mean labourers and workers who are supposed to be accommodated in industrial areas” he said.
