Sony sells online gaming unit to US Columbus Nova

(MENAFN) Japanese electronics giant Sony said it sold its online gaming unit to a US investment company, a move which will free it to make titles for consoles other than PlayStation, AFP reported.

The Japanese giant said its Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), maker of the popular 3D fantasy game EverQuest, has been acquired by New York investment management firm Columbus Nova.

The deal will see the former Sony unit operate as an independent game development studio under the name Daybreak Game Company. The two firms have not disclosed the financial terms yet.

The move will mean the new company can now develop games for mobile devices and non-Sony consoles, such as Microsoft's Xbox. The move also comes as part of an offloading plan by Sony to go back to profitability.
