Full-blown Kuwaiti opera marks national celebrations in Feb.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) In recognition of the sacrifices of Kuwait's martyrs during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, an unprecedented full-length opera will be staged on Feb 22-24, during the country's celebration of independence and liberation days, it was announced here on Saturday.

The opera is considered the first of its kind in the Gulf, being a Kuwaiti production that brings together talents from not only Kuwait but from other countries, Arab and foreign, said assistant director of Martyrs' Bureau, Fatima Al-Amir, in a statement to KUNA.

Called "Al-Deera Opera .. We remain Kuwaitis", this gigantic symphonic work comes to the light due to enormous contributions by Kuwaiti musicians, operatic singers, academicians, and a multitude of technicians who constitute the bedrock of a world-class operatic production of international proportions and quality, said the libretto writer Dr. Ali Al-Enizi, in a similar statement to KUNA.

The libretto stems its story-line and music from the heroic events that engulfed the martyrs of Kuwait during the grueling months of the 1990 invasion, such as what occurred at Beit Al-Qurain where numerous Kuwaitis lost their lives in defense of the nation, said Dr.Al-Enizi, stressing that the opera in its entirety is a vivid tribute to them.

Citing the fact that the backbone of a full-grown opera is a large symphonic orchestra with highly adept and accomplished first-class musicians, the opera composer, Dr. Rashid Al-Beghaili noted in a similar statement to KUNA that the musicians of this ambitious work come from a variety of nations such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, in addition to musicians from Kuwait, of course. He said the music content is an amalgam of western symphonic music pertinent to works of opera worldwide and Arabic or Kuwaiti music.

"When we first embarked on launching the first Kuwaiti opera of international standards, we made sure that it had a visible and readily-felt Kuwaiti flavor, reflecting the Kuwaiti environment and culture, while adhering to the norms and standards of a world-class opera," said the work's stage director Dr. Fahad Al-Abdul-Muhsen.

The singing in the opera is based on Kuwaiti poetry sung in an operatic fashion, glorifying the stories of Kuwaiti martyrs in an overall tableau employing Kuwaiti traditional clothing and paraphernalia.

Overseers of this opera have extended their thanks to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his support of this enormous work.
