(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President of the European Council Donald Tusk on behalf of the 28-member EU congratulated Sergio Mattarella, on his election as President of the Italian Republic earlier Saturday.
"Italy has chosen a much respected and experienced politician as head of state. His conviction and sense of justice will help Italy to continue playing a leading role in Europe. I wish President Mattarella every success in his new function," he said in a statement.
Tusk also expressed his deep appreciation to outgoing President Napolitano for his contribution to Italian political stability.
