Abu Dhabi — The Abu Dhabi Police records show that 61 people lost their lives in accidents caused by speeding in the emirate last year.

Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate said: “Of the total number of deaths caused by traffic accidents 23 per cent were attributed to speeding.”

Brigadier Al Harithi warned motorists against exceeding the legal speed limits. “The higher the speed the lesser the time to stop which makes it more difficult to avoid a traffic accident” he said.

“It is imperative that motorists respect the legal speed limits to avoid accidents that may result in deaths and injuries.” He reiterated the Abu Dhabi Police’s commitment to promote traffic education among drivers in the public and private sector entities.

The directorate will intensify its efforts in traffic control through patrols and radars.

A total of 10000 drivers from the public and private sector entities have benefited from the 169 awareness programmes and lectures held last year.

“These programmes and lectures aim to improve the rate of compliance with the legal speeds limits as displayed on the signage along the roads” he said.

Brigadier Al Harithi called upon the various segments of the community to imbibe the culture of safe driving.

The directorate has announced through various media channels the sites of radars and speed limits on internal and external roads of the emirate.

“The directorate appeals to drivers to respect the legal speed limits as specified on the signboards and urges them to reduce speed for the safety of them as well as other road users” Brigadier Al Harithi said.
