Crude oil finishes in the black

Crude oil futures ended with small gains overnight but only after the U.S. benchmark sank below the US$44-a-barrel level for the first time in nearly six years.

West Texas Intermediate for March delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose 0.2% to close at US$44.53 a barrel. The contract earlier dipped as low as US$43.58 its lowest level since March 2009.

Brent crude the global oil benchmark added 1.4% to settle at US$49.13 a barrel.
