29 January 2015: BMW is moving forward & testing a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell powered cars jointly developed with Toyota. The firm is said to have made huge developments in fuel cell packaging compared to earlier projects.
BMW is convinced that it can produce workable vehicles using hydrogen technology but claims that the infrastructure will need to be in place for the system to be taken up by the general public. In the meantime hydrogen fuel cell development is a costly business and the German firm has suggested that electric vehicle sales could overtake public interest in the alternative technology particularly given the concurrent advances in battery technology. These could dispel the worries about range that have put a number of buyers off electric vehicles and make them a far more viable commercial proposition.
BMW's 'I' range of electric cars is selling well and it is believed that the company hopes to add a hydrogen fuel cell powered mode to that line up in the future. Given that the technology under development is shared with Toyota the Japanese firm's FCV could share its power train for the proposed BMW i5.
