(MENAFN) Troubled British supermarket giant Tesco said it may cut over 2,000 jobs as part of plans to shut 43 stores in a company-wide overhaul, The Peninsula Qatar reported.
A spokesman of the supermarket confirmed that 2,000 jobs were under the threat to be slumped, adding that staff would be consulted in a bid to find alternative roles wherever possible.
Tesco had revealed cost-cutting plans earlier in January to shut the 43 unprofitable branches, sell assets and axe its shareholder dividend in a bid to revive its fortunes after an accounting scandal.
"Our priority is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and, wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco," chief executive said in a statement.
