2,500 Syrians registered monthly in Jordan last year

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) About 2,500 Syrian refugees registered every month on an average last year with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), bringing the total number of registered refugees to about 637,000.

The Spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, Ziad Al-Zoubi, on Wednesday said that a total of about 1.4 million Syrians live in Jordan as of now.

He added that the number of Syrians living in camps had risen to about 100,000 last year, representing 15 percent of Syrian refugees and seven percent of the total number of Syrians in the Kingdom, with a large number, about 85,000, concentrated in Al-Zaatari camp and 11,000 in Al-Azraq, while others are accommodated in various other camps allocated to them.

Al-Zoubi noted that the capital, Amman, and Al-Mafraq and Irbid governorates, host the largest number of refugees.

The spokesperson pointed out that the number of Syrians, who have obtained the special service card for Syrian refugees, has increased to about 700,000 people in 2014. He revealed that the government will soon start issuing magnetic cards, which also include an eye imprint, for all Syrians in Jordan, through security stations.

He said that the magnetic card will make the process of obtaining various services that Syrians need much easier, particularly when it comes to health, education and freedom of movement, adding that the cards will be disbursed through the security stations that are located in different parts of the Kingdom.
