(MENAFNEditorial) GEMS Education, in collaboration with Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the integrated free zone technology park, is set to host the fourth edition of Maker Day Dubai on 31 January 2015 at the GEMS Wellington Academy located within DSO.
Maker Day Dubai is a community celebration of innovation and creativity, and will include exhibits, designs and creative concepts that aim to improve the community or the world at large through shared learning. The event will run from 10:00am - 2:00pm, and comprise more than 40 workshops for visitors. Items that qualify for display at Maker Day Dubai 2015 must be original. Interactive exhibits will range from personally designed apps, video games, robotics and engineering projects to drones, 3D printed projects, and balloon rockets.
'Makers' at the event can create anything useful, fun, or just original. More than a craft show, the event is positioned as an 'everything creative show'. Participants can also sell the projects and crafts they have made, although the fundamental objective is to educate visitors about how the objects are made.
Maker Day Dubai is not a competition. However, visitors and an invited panel will be allowed to cast votes for maker stalls in categories such as the most innovative, most surprising, most beautiful, most useful, and the best use of recycled materials. Ten maker groups will also be selected to represent GEMS at the prestigious Innovator event run by the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee in March.
Shahla Ahmed Abdul Razak, Deputy CEO at DSOA, said: "We are glad to be part of an initiative that targets youth, and encourages creativity and innovation in the next generation. A community is evaluated and perceived by the quality of people and the activities it leads and not just by its buildings and bricks. We have launched several activities that support entrepreneurs, and events such as Maker Day Dubai are designed to add value to our initiatives while impacting the lives of people living and working at DSO in particular and Dubai at large. We are confident this event will offer them the opportunity to discover, learn and interact with one another."
Originally held at GEMS Wellington International School, the current edition of Maker Day Dubai has benefitted from the collaboration of schools, universities, community makers, and government entities as well as local and international businesses.
Maker Day Dubai Founder and Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at GEMS Wellington International School, Christine Nasserghodsi said: "Maker Day Dubai brings diverse communities from across the UAE together to share their work, learn new skills that may help turn their ideas into reality, and to inspire one another. It is a fun family day out and a launch pad for many of our aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs."
