Combining Lasers and Robotics for Neclear Decomissioning

The LaserSnake2 project is an £7.7m collaborative R&D project partly funded by The Department for Energy and Climate Change The Technology Strategy Board and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. The project is led by OC Robotics alongside partners including TWI ULO Optics and National Neuclear Laboratory.

The objectives are:

The development of long reach snake-arm robots for hazardous and confined spaces both in air and under water.

The development of laser cutting optics for safe remote cutting in air and in water particularly focused on nuclear decommissioning.

The project set for completion in 2016 has massive potential outside of the nuclear sector. Potential applications include maintenance and inspection of assets in the construction and the oil & gas industries and assembly and maintenance within confined spaces such as aircraft wings.
