Sony to cut 1,000 jobs in smartphone business


(MENAFN) Sony Corp. announced an additional 1,000 job cuts in its loss-making smartphone business trying to return the company to profitability as early as the next business year, sources showed, Kyodo News reported.

The Japanese electronics giant is studying the additional decrease in workforce in Asia "excluding China " Europe and the United States following an already decided plan to trim 1,000 jobs in China, according to the sources.

These steps would slash the total workforce in the mobile phone division by about 30 percent to 5,000 and help Sony pursue a global of lowering costs in the business by 30 percent by March 2017.
