(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, participated today in the sports day event for people with Down syndrome, organised by Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex.
HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Higher Committee for Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities, also took part in the event, held under the theme ''My Community .... A City for Everyone'' in collaboration with the UAE Down Syndrome Association and Special Olympics Emirates.
The sports day was organised in implementation of Sheikh Hamdan's directives and in line with the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex's social responsibility towards the 'My community... A city for Everyone' initiative, launched by HH.
The initiative comes in line with backing the current efforts of Dubai to empower people with disabilities within an overarching framework that contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of existing projects and initiatives, and developing more initiatives of such sort in accordance with a vision that aims to maximise the participation and integration of this category in the community, and to create new opportunities through which to overcome all the obstacles that may stand in the way of positively engaging and integrating this segment in their social environment as individuals who possess productive and creative capabilities.
The initiative is aimed at launching a set of laws and legislative frameworks and initiatives that contribute to the enhancement of services infrastructure that provides access to all the facilities and benefit from all the services, provide excellent health care to people with disabilities, as well as supportive social services, and create a broad societal awareness that contributes to integrating people with disabilities and confirms their participation in community development.
The prime goal is to transform Dubai into a friendly city to persons with disabilities by 2020.
In last April, Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex hosted a friendly basketball match between UAE National Wheelchair Basketball Team and Higher Committee for Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities Team. Sheikh Hamdan led the UAE National Wheelchair Basketball Team and his brother, Sheikh Mansour led the Higher Committee for Protection of the Rights of People with Disabilities Team .
