MoTC planning to integrate ports to boost trade activities across Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) is planning to integrate its ports (border sea and air) to boost trade and commerce in the country.

This was revealed by H E Said bin Hamdoon al Harthy Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs in MoTC on Tuesday at an international workshop that looked at ways to develop a common system to boost trade.

At the event representatives from various European Asian and regional countries shared their views and experiences in building and developing port systems.

Participants looked at having an integrated system which can help traders and authorities communicate effectively and efficiently.

While looking at the opportunities and challenges present in Oman several ministry officials put forward proposals that could be implemented.

H E Harthy said "We want to make it easy and fast for traders. We'll look at the necessary legislation. The sultanate will study the systems followed by countries like Singapore Spain and UAE.

"There is no time frame yet [for the project] but at the end of the day we want to ensure that an efficient system is in place and everyone understands what their roles are. We look forward to the contribution of the private sector as well."

The workshop discussed issues such as developing systems strengthening the shared goals of businesses and ports managing change caused by the implementation of these systems and preparing a strong legal basis for facilities.

It also looked at ways of forming a strong system that satisfies the needs of the business community.
