(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Thirty-three falconers are competing in the 16th round of Hudud Al Tahaddi challenge today, the last before the finals.

It is a competition in which falcons seek to obstruct the flight of homing pigeons trained to fly to another point kilometres away.

Dau showcases falconers' skill in training their birds for speed, during which a falcon is required to cover 400 metres towards its owner, who is signalling it to approach at the finish line in the shortest time.

"I'm happy to have won in this event. The current edition of the Qatar Falcons and Hunting Festival has been enjoyable across all its events. I wanted to compete this year to gain experience in falconry, get a feel of how such competitions are held today," said Al Nuaimi.

Al Zamat expressed joy over his victory and dedicated it to the festival's patron H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and the organising committee for their contributions to making the festival a success.

"I've been competing in falconry events for some time, and I've participated in local and international championships, but this edition of the festival has a special place for me as it was very competitive, featuring some of the finest falconers in the Gulf," he added.
