US senators urge need for US role on ground in Syria, Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Two US senators have urged the need for their nation to be involved on the ground across crisis-affected areas in the Middle East and for a no-fly zone to be set up to combat both Islamic State (ISIL) insurgents and the Syrian regime.

"We have seen American public opinion dramatically grow as they begin to appreciate the nature of this threat," Sen. John McCain told US news channel, CBS in an interview.

"We have got to have boots on the ground. We have got to have training capability ... It means forward air controllers. It means special forces. It means intelligence and it means other capabilities," said the Arizona senator.

He regarded the US' planned strategy to train Syrian rebels outside their country's borders and send them back home "to be barrel-bombed by Bashar Assad" as "immoral." McCain went to underline the need for a no-fly zone in order to combat both ISIL and the Syrian regime.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California went further to implicate the Houthi movement in Yemen. But she stopped short of urging a ground offensive, calling on the need for what she termed as "special operations" to be deployed instead.

"We know that the Houthis have said they would leave us alone, and yet their slogan is 'Death to America, Death to Israel'," she said.

"They have deposed the president. The military has separated off.

"The American people don't want another war. There's been two Iraq wars. There's been one Afghan war. They don't see it. It's in a foreign land. It's far and apart from them.

"And so where McCain is right, I do think we need some special operations in these countries on the ground, more than just advisers. And I think we need to protect our allies. That's Israel. That's Jordan. That's Saudi Arabia - and be more pronounced about it."
