1,200 Omani youths surveyed on family, employment issues


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Research Council (TRC) shared the results of a survey conducted on 1200 Omani youths on issues like income and employment and relationship between family and youth at a two-day conference recently.

Conducted in collaboration with the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) the findings of the survey will be used for setting up a Social Indicators Database (SID) stated a press release.

The survey results were presented at the conference titled 'National Conference on Social Indicators: Policy and Research Strategies'. The survey was carried out on a sample of 1200 young Omanis aged between 18 and 29 years as part of the Social Observatory Research Program (SORP) of TRC in co-operation with the South Hampton University UK.

On the first day the conference touched on topics like 'Oman in 2040' 'How to measure social science capacity in the Arab region' and 'Social change in Oman: Implications and challenges'. The second day of the conference touched on the role of SID social indicators for policy development and programme interventions and social indicators for interdisciplinary social science research.

Dr Hilal Ali al Hinai secretary general of TRC said "The conference discussed the findings of the survey. We are now in the process of setting up the database within the framework of activating a research system which is being developed based on the suggestions put forward by institutions such as NCSI ministries and researchers at higher education institutions in the sultanate."

SORP is led by a steering committee under the chairmanship of H E Dr Yahya bin Bader al MaawaliUndersecretary in the Ministry of Social Development that includes representatives from the ministries of Health and Education ROP Sultan Qaboos University Majlis A'Shura and NCSI.
