Latvia Calls for EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting to Discuss Ukraine

(MENAFN- QNA) Latvia has called for urgently convening an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council to discuss the deteriorating situation in Eastern Ukraine.

In a statement posted on Latvian Foreign Ministry website, Latvia, which holds the current EU Presidency, condemned the new escalation of violence in the east of Ukraine.

"It becomes increasingly obvious that pro-Moscow terrorist groups with their attacks in Mariupol and elsewhere in eastern Ukraine, by targeting civilians in an inhumane and cynical manner, also demonstrate beyond a doubt that Russia is not interested in a peaceful resolution of the conflict," the statement said.

"Peace initiatives proposed by Russia and involvement in multilateral negotiations have possibly been only simulation and mask for real action," it added.
