UAE initiatives for addressing climate change highlighted

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The UAE is leading the way in the Arab world with the number of emission reduction projects recognised by the United Nations under the Clean Development Mechanism says expert.

Abu Dhabi - The French Embassy with the support of the UAE and Masdar organised a series of workshops to raise awareness that mitigating climate change is at reach without destroying economies and our way of life.

These workshops describe a wide scope of innovative technologies in different sectors deployed in the UAE France and partner countries by numerous industries and organisations that are already effectively reducing carbon emissions.

The status of research and development for some of the remaining key stumbling blocks are also being looked at while underlining the importance of collaborative research and international cooperation to achieve the decisive breakthroughs still required in some areas. Apart from Masdar organisations such as Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi Dubai Electricity and Water Authority Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) and the Irena are participating in the three-day long discussions. On the first day a series of UAE initiatives towards climate change mitigation were highlighted by Fazil Abdul Rahiman a consultant with DCCE.

“The UAE is leading the way in the Arab world with the number of emission reduction projects recognised by the United Nations under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)” he pointed out.

He highlighted 14 such projects in the UAE involving renewable energy production energy efficiency improvement waste management and wind energy in detail.

The DCCE which leverages Dubai’s economic potential in carbon through Clean Development Mechanism is a key component of the Supreme Council’s efforts to develop a sustainable-energy economy and plans to offset several million metric tons of carbon annually by selling carbon credits on the international market.

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in Paris — which will be held in November this year — is touted to be one of the most important international negotiations on cutting down greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The international climate conference’s objective is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate. The negotiations’ outcome will shape the future of the planet for many generations.
