Saudi AWT, Spanish Abengoa sign deal for USD130m solar project

(MENAFN) Saudi's AWT, the commercial arm of KACST (King Abdulaziz City of Science & Technology), said that it has signed an agreement with Abengoa, the Spain-based sustainability technology company to jointly develop the world's first solar-powered desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, Gulf Business reported.

AWT, which was recently created to bring affordable and sustainable water solutions to the country, said that the Al Khafji plant is expected to be valued USD130 million and will be able to produce 60.000 cubic meters of water per day to supply Al Khafji City in north-eastern Saudi Arabia

The company added that Saudi, currently using a significant amount of oil to power its 30-odd desalination plants, estimated at over 1.5 million barrels per day, will benefit from the project since it aims at providing a stable supply of drinking water throughout the year.

Meanwhile, Abengoa, which has a total desalination capacity of nearly 1.5 million cubic meter per day, which enough to supply 8.5 million people around the world, said that this project will be added to the number of projects it is undertaking in the Middle East, including the Barka desalination plant in Oman and the region's largest solar plant, in Abu Dhabi.
