Nishka Lulla brings DIVAlicious to Dubai
Designer to the stars Nishka Lulla is all set to showcase her latest collection at DIVAlicious on January 23 and 24. In a recent conversation with City Times she spoke about being inspired by her famous mother Neeta Lulla her philosophy of fashion and why it gives her ‘immense joy’ to be exhibiting her creations in style savvy Dubai.
Did the fact that your mother is a famous designer inspire your interest in fashion
Yes my mother did inspire me to become a designer. While growing up my mother’s workshop was at home; it started as a small business that has developed into a big brand today. Since I was little the sewing machines the fabrics designing styling shoots and the transformation and makeovers of women after wearing new ensembles really fascinated me. I started to make little Barbie doll outfits on my own on the machine since I was five played a lot of dress up tried sketching different outfits and knew this was what I wanted to do.
Are you influenced in any way by your mother’s designs or are yours completely different
My mother’s forte is more bridal couture while mine is pret and diffusion. we both love colour but work with it in different ways. Our designs are extensions of our individual selves.
How important is it to balance outlandish elements with simplicity
The label ‘Nishka Lulla’ gravitates towards a more raw and easy quality that draws its inspiration from everyday living and travel. The Indian accents are an evident detail as are the simple silhouettes. When a collection presents an array of non-traditional choices to a market you are enabling your customer to experiment think and feel differently. You hand them the power to dress in a fashion that suits their moods the best. This could be an attribute of youthfulness and is as relevant to a 50-year-old as it is to a 15-year-old. All I intend to do is present a flexible collection a collection full of choices.
Tell us about the collection you will be showcasing at DIVAlicious.
This collection articulates femininity and an added wipsy feel with a palette of colors in shades of ivory peach baby pink and salmon. The silhouettes are comfortable and wearable with motifs of delicate floral and checks.
Your clientele includes many Bollywood celebrities. Who according to you is the most style savvy
I think everyone is style savvy. Every celebrity now has a stylist who knows the trends and more importantly most of them dress up according to their own style sensibilities.
What are the hottest trends for this season
There are many trends - shirt dresses the colour white blues monochromes prints like stripes florals gingham checks.
Name one Hollywood/Bollywood celebrity you would love to create something for.
Kate Upton and Deepika Padukone.
What are your thoughts on Dubai as a fashion destination
I think the fashion scene in Dubai is growing rapidly and this encourages designers to visit and showcase their creations. Dubai is booming in all aspects and this gives me immense joy to be here. I also heard that there is the Dubai Design District being constructed which is very promising and will open many doors for existing and new designers in the future.
How easy or difficult is it to break through as a designer and make an impact
I believe one has a personal take on fashion; it’s an extension of one’s self which is if not constantly then definitely more often than not in a state of flux. My evolution as a person colours my perception of fashion and thus influences what I bring to the table. I have however developed some sort of a framework within which I distribute my ideas in a more relevant and topical manner. As a designer my primary objective is to stay true to my findings and represent them as honestly as possible through my work. Contemporary Indian fashion is an endless sea which means different things to different people. It’s more crucial to maintain your spot choosing to stay true to your sensibilities consistently.
If you weren’t a designer what could have been an alternative career path
I always thought of being a designer and have worked hard on having that career in my life.
