UN commission meets witnesses over Israeli war on Gaza

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) A United Nations Independent Commission of Inquiry probing the 2014 Gaza Conflict has ended investigations into violations of the international human rights law in Palestine, in particular the Israeli war against the besieged coastal enclave.

As part of its mission, the commission had visited Jordan and met a number of witnesses from the region.

During the probe, the Commission members and investigators spoke to witnesses and victims in the Gaza strip and West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem. The UN team is expected to hear from more people in the coming weeks, according to a statement issued by the UN office in Amman.

The statement said that the Commissioners remain ready to travel to meet witnesses face-to-face if the Israeli government grants access to them, or the security situation permits them to cross over from Egypt into Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

United Nations Commission on Human Rights, in its resolution adopted on 23 July 2014, has requested the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for ''Ensuring respect for international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem."

The resolution also requested the High Commissioner ''to urgently dispatch an independent, international commission of inquiry, to be appointed by the President of the Human Rights Council, to investigate all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, particularly in the occupied Gaza Strip, in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June 2014.''
