Yemen- Houthis seize control of presidential palace

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The military wing of the Houthi movement, Ansar Allah, have broken into Yemen's presidential palace and taken control of military positions inside after fierce fighting with palace guards since the night before, according to local reports on Tuesday.

The palace is currently being guarded by the rebels, who are said to have reached a ceasefire with the president ensuring they would not be causing him any harm, according to presidential sources, quoted by local media.

The palace was seized after some of the fiercest fighting witnessed in years between both sides, which led to the death of nine and injury of around 90.

"The Houthis will be present within the palace and at military positions alongside army units as they have been doing in other state institutions since September (2014)," the sources said.

"They do not intend to harm the president or to force him to step down as much as they want him to work under their supervision in order to control decision-making.

"This is their policy, based on an imposing presence that affects and controls the operation of state institutions," added the sources.

The rebels, who have been controlling the capital Sanaa since September 21, 2014, are demanding that senior presidential aides, whom they hold in contempt, be replaced by people loyal to their cause.
