US court accuses two Yemenis of conspiring to murder US nat'ls abroad

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Two Yemeni nationals have been charged by a US court for allegedly conspiring to murder US nationals abroad and providing material support to Al-Qaeda.

The defendants allegedly conspired to carry out armed attacks against United States military personnel and facilitated the entry of an American citizen into Al-Qaeda, said a complaint and arrest warrant unsealed today in the federal court of the Eastern District of New York.

It charged Saddiq Al-Abbadi, 36, also known as 'Sufiyan Al-Yemeni' and 'Sufwan,' and Ali Alvi, 30, also known as 'Issa al-Yemeni,' with conspiracy to murder US nationals abroad and providing material support to Al-Qaeda.

According to the warrant, Al-Abbadi and Alvi are both members of al-Qaeda "who engaged in attacks against US military forces" stationed in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2008.

The document goes on to mention that when the two were in Pakistan in 2008 both "helped an American citizen gain entry into Al-Qaeda so that he could fight against US troops in Afghanistan and US citizens in the homeland." It added, "Al-Abbadi led a battle against US forces in Paktya Province (Afghanistan) in May 2008 during which one US Army Ranger was killed and several others were seriously wounded." However, at present, the charges in the complaint are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
