Dubai plans to become hub for medical tourism

(MENAFN) Dubai said it is planning to attract more medical tourists over the next five years, as part of its strategy to become a medical tourism hub and destination in the region, Emirates 24/7 reported.

"Dubai plans to attract 500,000 medical tourists a year and boost its economy by up to Dh2.6 billion in the next five years. By hosting FAMC at DSO, we reiterate our complete support to this project throughout the implementation of the prestigious medical facility. The high-profile project seeks to implement the strategy put in place by the executive board for the promotion of Dubai as a leading destination for medical tourism. I am confident FAMC will serve as a hub for research and achieve medical milestones across a wide spectrum of health care issues," Chairman of Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, DSOA, said.

As part of the emirate's efforts to achieve its goal, Dubai will invest USD272.18 million on the Fakeeh Academic Medical Centre, which will be built across 15.000 square meters and will be constructed in two phases, with Phase One, which is set for completion in 2017, is expected to include the delivery of a 150-bed state-of-the-art smart hospital, while phase 2 of the project will increase the capacity with an additional 150-beds and is estimated to be done in 2019.

The 300-bed facility, being developed by Saudi Arabia's Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, DSFH, will also offer robotics surgery as well as include five centers of excellence that specialize in diabetes and endocrinology, muscles, bones and joints, emergency medicine, pulmonary medicine and cardiology.
