GCC aluminum output up 31 percent in 2014


(MENAFN) The GCC's aluminum production registered an increase by 31 percent or 1.179.527 tons to 4.928.143 tons in 2014compared with 3.748.616 tons in 2013, thus constituting 10 percent of the world's production, Gulf Daily News reported

Collectively, the five aluminum companies of EGA, Alba, Ma'aden, Qatalum and Sohar Aluminum that together make up the Gulf Aluminum Council (GAC) produced 4.928,143 tons of primary aluminum last year.

'The main increase has come from Ma'aden Aluminum, the Saudi Arabian startup which was successfully ramped up during the year, and Emal Phase 2 project completion before the target date,'" GAC secretary general said.

GAC said that it expects that the production for the current year to be more than 5 million tons, adding that the GCC regions remains one of the leading hubs of the aluminum industry with 40 percent of its production utilized by the downstream aluminum industry in the Gulf for regional and international market, whereas the rest of the primary aluminum production are exported to different regions of the world.
