Qatar- QF holds orientation session for Doha Youth Forum

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Foundation (QF), in coordination with Preparatory Committee for 13th United Nation Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, organised an orientation session for students participating in Doha Youth Forum from April 7 to 9, coinciding with the UN Congress.

Speakers welcomed the students at the session at Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Students' Center.

The Deputy Head, Preparatory Committee of the 13th Congress, Ambassador Ahmed Hassan Al Hammadi, briefed the students on UN's Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Congresses and their importance in gathering experts and practitioners to unite international efforts against cybercrimes and environmental crimes, among others.

He also spoke about Qatar's efforts to make the upcoming congress successful through visits to countries to unite visions on the issues on the agenda.

Dimitri Vlassis, Head, Corruption Prevention and Economic Crimes, UNODC, praised efforts of Qatar and its preparatory committee to organise the congress and stressed that it can't be successful without political determination by all participating nations.

He also praised Qatar's willingness to make the congress a point for start, and not a point of arrival, and said the world is changing fast, which requires from the international community to join hands to achieve the post-2015 development goals.

Dr Khalid Al Khanji, Deputy Head, Students' Affairs, HBKU, called on youth to use the forum in making their voice heard, asserting that the forum will discuss the same issues discussed by the 13th congress.

Shiekha Amal bint Thamir Al Thani, CEO, Health, Safety, Security and Environment, QF, highlighted QF's efforts to enhance students' capabilities in many aspects of life, and the importance of the forum in providing students with opportunity to enhance knowledge and gain experiences.

Jassim Telfet said QF's efforts complement those exerted by the Ministry of Interior to provide security for all in Qatar and to make the congress successful.

Students formed three groups and had separate sessions on issues. Supervising tutors explained to students the role they can play and the issues to be discussed.

Dimitri expressed optimism about students' preparations for the forum and said they are willing to provide the congress with great ideas.

"I was surprised by two things. First, the diversity in students nationalities and academic professions and, second, their determination to discuss the issues provided in sessions seriously.

The forum is a Qatari initiative for the first time in the history of UN crime congresses, which is organised by the preparatory committee of the 13th Congress and QF.

The congress will be held at Qatar National Convention Center from April 12 to 19.
