Malaysia routs Oman in HWL Round Two


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Tournament favourite Malaysia routed Oman 7-0 in a Group A match of the Hockey World League (HWL) Round Two in Singapore on Monday.

It was Oman's first loss in the tournament after it had recorded a 3-2 win in its opener against hosts Singapore on Saturday.

Razie Rahim opened the floodgates for world No 12 Malaysia in the seventh minute off a penalty corner and Faizal Saari converted a short corner in the 17th minute to make it 2-0.

Marhan Jalil then sounded the boards off another penalty corner in the 22nd minute while five minutes later Jalil made it 4-0. Saari made it 5-0 in the 38th minute from a penalty stroke. Ahmad Tajuddin and Ahmad Tengku completed the rout with two quick goals in a two-minute span - in the 44th and 46th minutes.

Oman which is coached by Germany's Oliver Kurtz next plays Ukraine on Tuesday.

Malaysia tops the group with six points after two wins - it beat Ukraine 5-1 on Saturday.

Ukraine and Oman have three points each but the former has a better goal-difference after it defeated Singapore 2-1 on Monday.

Hosts Singapore are yet to open their account.

Group B comprises Japan Poland Bangladesh and Mexico. The three top finishers in the eight-team event which concludes on January 25 will be guaranteed a place in the semifinals of the competition.

The winners from that last-four stage will make it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
