The book which originates in Ireland discusses the Saint himself and provides a summary of important facts relating to the patron saint of the household. The book also discusses the popular practice of burying a Saint Joseph statue in the garden to help sell a house.
It is thought that the house selling tradition may have originated in Germany when a group of nuns are said to have buried a statue of St Joseph in a field to help them buy land. It is unsure how that tradition evolved into the current practice of burying a statue of St Joseph upside down in a garden to sell a house.
The book also provides background information on another story about a popular belief that Saint Joseph played a role in the construction of an architecturally seemingly impossible staircase in New Mexico. The staircase has no central supports and makes two complete turns. The staircase was also made of wood which is not indigenous to the area. Many people believe that Saint Joseph was the mystery carpenter who turned up in answer to prayers to build a staircase to connect a choir and chapel.
