Illegal logging rampant in winter, ministry

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Four instances of illicit logging in the forests in the governorate of Ajloun were recorded as the practice continues unrestrained, particularly during winter when demand for wood used for heating rises, according to the forestry department in the region, northwest of Amman.

"The Ajloun governorate is under attack by logging gangs, particularly in winter, which warrants mobilizing various authorities, security bodies, environmental police and local administrators to protect 'this national resource', said Ajoun forestry department director, Fayadh Hawarat.

He told Petra that vehicles used to ferry timber had been impounded and two tons of wood was seized at the site, adding that two offenders were still at large.

The official said his department sends round-the-clock patrols and rangers to forests in the mountainous region to stop daily assaults on forests, but added that violators use various tactics to dodge authorities.

"The biggest problem facing the forestry teams is that violators use vehicles without number plates, which makes it hard to recognise and pursue them," but vowed to take "stringent measures and impose the stiffest possible penalty to deter them."
