PM, Japanese counterpart chair talks in Amman

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Jordan and Japan held official talks in Amman today that were chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe.

The talks focused on bilateral ties and ways to further boost relations in various fields, as well as latest developments in the Middle East.

Welcoming the visit of the Japanese prime minister, Ensour highlighted the importance of Shinzo Abe's visit to the region, which is his first official visit since his coalition won re-election to form the government again last month.

Ensour further said that Jordan and Japan have friendly ties, adding that last year coincided with the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"We consider Japan an important strategic partner and one of the main supporters of the Kingdom through the financial and technical cooperation program that has a basic role in implementing developmental projects in Jordan," Ensour added.

He said that escorting a delegation from the Japanese private sector during this visit is an indication of the important role played by this sector in further boosting ties between the two countries and peoples.

Further, Ensour said that the challenges facing the region, whether those related to the Palestinian issue or the crisis in Syria, require support from the international community for efforts that aim to fight terrorism and terrorist organizations.

Jordan, he said, has taken important steps to build a modern and a tolerant society.

The Japanese prime minister noted that he was aware of the challenges facing Jordan. "We are committed to supporting the Kingdom to improve peace and stability in the region and we will continue to do so," Abe added.

He stressed the importance of improving relations between Jordan and Japan, noting that Japan will continue its support to Jordan to address the repercussions resulting from Jordan's hosting Syrian refugees.

Abe also praised reforms being implemented by Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

Further, a number of Jordanian ministers who attended the meeting praised Japan's continued support to the Kingdom.

In the presence of the two premiers, The Ministry of Energy signed a letter of intent with Mitsui Corporation, which owns and operates the fourth private generating station project to generate electricity using solar cells.

Another agreement was signed between the two countries' private sectors to carry out the "Shams Maa'n" project, which will be the largest solar power project in the Middle East with an investment of up to $ 160 million, which will contribute in supporting the Kingdom's energy strategy, as well as diversifying the nation's energy supply.

The project, which will be implemented this year, will supply Jordan with 60 million kilowatt / hour, which is equivalent to 1 percent of Jordan's energy consumption per year and is expected to create 700 jobs.
