Belgium deploys troops on streets to guard strategic locations

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Belgian government has decided to deploy 300 soldiers to guard strategic locations in the country in the fight against terrorism.

Belgian media on Saturday quoted Defense Minister Steven Vandeput as saying: "We're talking about strategic locations, vulnerable places. These include foreign embassies, buildings linked to the Jewish Community, and locations where a heightened threat is anticipated." Belgian Home Minister Jan Jambon said the army can only be deployed under a level three terror alert in Belgium as is presently the case.

Prime Minister Charles Michel and other members of the cabinet late on Friday discussed the mobilization of armed forces and to strengthen security measures.

Belgian police killed two men during a raid against a suspected terrorist group in the eastern city of Verviers on Thursday. Belgian prosecutors said the group was planning to launch attacks against police targets in the country.
