(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egyptian movie star Faten Hamama has succumbed to her illness, Chairman of the Cinematic Syndicate Ashraf Abdulghafour announced on Saturday.
Hamama was admitted to Al-Fuad Hospital in October 6 City where she passed away at the age of 83, Abdulghafour told KUNA.
Born in 1931 in Mansoura City, Daqahliya governorate, the renowned actress started her cinema carrier as a child in "Yom Saed' (happy day) movie starring late artist Mohammad Abdulwahab, in 1938.
She graduated from the Egyptian Drama Institute in 1947 and rose to eminence after starring in 'siraa fil wadi' (struggle in the valley), 'doa Al-karawan' (call of the nightingale), 'impratoriat mim' (Empire of M), 'orido hallan' (I want solution), and 'lailat Al-qabd ala fatma' (night of Fatema's arrest).
Hamama also contributed to the US musical comedy film Cairo, directed by W. S. Van Dyke in 1942.
She also starred in several TV serials such as 'hikaya wara kol bab' (story behind each door), 'damir abla hekmat (Mrs. Hekmat's conscience), and 'wajh Al-kamar (the moon's face).
She won awards of the film festivals of Tehran in 1977 and Alexandria in 2001.
