Police recover Dh301 million in dud cheque money


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Anti-crime department of the Dubai Police recovered Dh301 million in bounced cheques in 2014, officials revealed on Saturday. A senior police official said 351 suspects are wanted for issuing dud cheques.

Colonel Salem Al Rumaithi, Deputy Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the objective of the Anti-crime department is to "prevent crime before it occurs" and to reduce the crime rate to the minimum.

He said the department has managed to tackle serious crimes, spread awareness and identify gaps that help criminals commit crimes. He said the security programmes implemented by the department helped in reducing the number of crimes in the city.

Colonel Ahmed Thani bin Ghalita, Director of the Anti-crime department, said the department arrested 891 wanted people and 9,899 residency law violators.

The police arrested 36 suspects for breach of trust, 71 for theft, 11 for embezzlement, 65 for consuming and selling alcohol, 23 for drug-related cases and 69 for assault cases. Forty were arrested for failure to pay money and 159 for other cases.

Bin Ghalita said most of the arrested wanted people are Arabs at 218, followed by 189 Pakistanis, 123 Indians, 106 AGCC nationals, 83 Bangladeshis, 20 Filipinos and 113 are from other countries.

Two thieves held

Col bin Ghalita said one of the most important arrests last year was the arrest of two Africans, who allegedly specialised in stealing computer devices from public transport vehicles. The duo allegedly broke open the windows of vehicles and stole computers from inside.

They reportedly committed 35 thefts in the city, most of them in Muraqqabat and Qusais. The suspects were arrested from Muraqqabat area while they were about to steal computer devices from a van. "On searching them, we recovered stolen computers. On being questioned, they confessed that they sent the stolen computers to their home country and sold them for Dh5,000 each."
