Qatar- Premier launches smart meter system


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani visited Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) where he was briefed on progress in current projects, plans and strategic future projects.

He attended a presentation on the main projects and preparations in sectors, including consumer services, water, electricity, cooling of areas, energy rationalisation and efficiency.

The presentation also included a review of emergency services centres, electronic services provided and plans to improve them.

The Prime Minister underlined the importance of providing the best services to citizens and residents, developing services and responding to the needs of consumers.

He also stressed the importance of care for infrastructure projects and their readiness.

He reviewed a project for early delivery of electricity and water for the plots of land not yet been built.

The Premier praised the performance index of the power grid in Qatar, its outstanding level on the region level, the full coverage of electricity and water networks and water security projects, including the construction of main giant tanks for strategic water storage.

He was also briefed on achievements in the rationalisation and reduction of consumption since the launch of the national programme for energy conservation and efficiency in 2012, drawing attention to the importance of education and its role in reducing consumption and abuse, particularly of water.

He also reviewed the role of Kahramaa in providing electricity and water services to vital projects, including Doha New Port Project, Qatar Integrated Railway Project (Qatar Rail), World Cup projects and others.

The Premier was briefed by directors of various departments on projects being carried out.

He toured the Crises Management Room where he was briefed on the surveillance and control system and plan for addressing crises. He also visited the training halls.

The Premier launched the smart meters system which is one of the most advanced in the world, based on remote reading and equipped with consumption data recording modules for electricity and water and GPS modules for localising individual metering points.

The Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada said the visit reflects the Premier's keenness to follow up on the progress in the projects and the attention Qatar pays to the electricity and water sector. It also reflects the Premier's keenness to provide full support to Kahramaa to enable it to complete projects on schedule in accordance with the required quality and standards, Dr Al Sada added.
