European car sales jump 5.7 percent in 2014

(MENAFN) European passenger car sales jumped 5.7 percent in 2014, bringing to an end six consecutive years of falling registrations on increasing demand for low-cost models, QNA reported.

Passenger car registrations in the European Union (EU) climbed to 12.5 million in 2014 after slumping to a two-decade low in 2013 with sales surging in the countries at the centre of the region's debt crisis.

While Spain posted a 18.4 percent gain last year, sales in Portugal rocketed up 34.8 percent with Ireland not far behind at 29.6 percent, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) said.

Meanwhile, sales in Greece, where an economic and financial meltdown helped to trigger the euro debt crisis about five years ago, climbed 21.3 percent in the cited period.
