(MENAFN- ProactiveInvestors) The British Geological Society has revealed it plans to independently monitor two UK fracking programmes planned this year.
A team of BGS-led academics intends to monitor wells in Lancashire to be drilled by Cuadrilla and these studies will be separate and independent from the oil and gas company’s own monitoring activities.
It is designed to enhance the scientific understanding of the effects of shale gas operations on the environment. The findings will be open and available to the public.
The research promises to provide independent insight into the impacts of the controversial process of fracking and as such could prove influential in the debate over the future development of Britain’s nascent shale gas industry.
“Hydraulic fracturing of shale rock is a new activity within the UK which as with any subsurface industrial activity will induce changes” said Professor Rob Ward the BGS director of Groundwater Science.
“A programme of research that will involve monitoring before during and after the operations will provide valuable scientific information.”
