ERC team distributes winter aid to refugees in Iraq's Kurdistan

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A high-level team from the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) on Wednesday distributed emergency winter aid to Syrian refugees in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, as part of the Show Compassion humanitarian campaign, launched last week by the UAE.

Secretary-General of the ERC, Mohammed Ateeq Al Falahi, who lead the team, was accompanied by the UAE Consul-General, Rashid Mohammed Al Mansouri, as the team distributed 2400 food parcels and 500 individual assistance packages for children and winter clothing for women and children at Qushtaba and al-Hilal refugee camps in southern Erbil.

The team also distributed aid to families in a makeshift refugee camp in Ainkawa, western Erbil.

The ERC is assessing the humanitarian needs of refugees in the Iraqi region.

Some 240,000 Syrian refugees and more than 1,6 million Iraqi refugees have fled to Kurdistan where bitterly cold winter weather represents a challenge to humanitarian operations.

Recently, the ERC teams managed to carry emergency aid to refugees in mountainous areas despite the harsh blizzard which descended on the region.
