Daughters 'mortgaged 'for loan in India

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) In an incident which serves as a reminder of bonded labour, a financially beleaguered couple allegedly 'mortgaged' their two daughters with a loan-shark in Warni Mandal of nearby Nizamabad district.

The incident, bizarre as it may sound, would not have come to light but for the Sankranti festival. The couple - K Kashiram and his wife Shivamma - who had borrowed a paltry Rs10,000 against the 'mortgage' of their two daughters, approached the money-lender to 'release' them so that they can take part in the festival falling on Thursday.

The money-lender, however, refused to oblige following which the couple approached the police.

Sources said that the couple had borrowed the money about three months ago on condition that they would work for the money-lender.

However, they could not keep their promise with Shivamma falling sick and had to shift elsewhere.

In return, the couple agreed to send their two daughters, aged 10 and 7, to work for the money-lender both at his home and in his small business.

With police intervention, the daughters were reunited with their parents for the festival and both the couple and the money-lender are now being counseled by the cops against such practices.
