Man steals Dh75,000 from friend's car in Ras Al Khaimah

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Police have arrested an Arab man for stealing Dh75,000 from the car of his Emirati friend in the Maamura area.

According to a senior police officer, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team managed to nab the 22-year-old man, identified as M.R., in just an hour after receiving the complaint.

Major Waleed Juma Kanfash, head of the CID branch at the Maamura police station, on Monday said a 30-year-old Emirati man, K.A., lodged a theft complaint against his friend.

"K.A told the police that M.R, who was sitting next to him in his car, saw him keeping Dh75,000 in a bag under the front seat of his car." When the complainant got off his car and went to a hotel nearby for a few minutes, the suspect took advantage of the chance, stole the money and fled the scene, he added.

"Having found neither his friend nor his money, K.A. rushed to the Maamura police station and reported the theft, following which a CID team was dispatched to locate M.R."

Preliminary investigations showed that M.R was at one of the country's airports in a bid to escape outside the UAE.

"The vigilant security bodies tracked the suspect down to the airport where he was apprehended red-handed with Dh63,000 out of the Dh75,000 he had stolen," Kanfash said. The accused was taken to the Maamura police station where he admitted to stealing his friend's money. "He also confessed that he spent Dh12,000 of the stolen amount," he said.

The case has been referred to the RAK Public Prosecution for further investigations and legal action.

Major Kanfash urged the motorists never to leave their precious or valuable items in their cars. "It is also very important to be more cautious when withdrawing large amounts of cash from banks. One should never leave money or other valuables visible to anyone, even if it were his friends, as people may be in need of money and may sometimes, in desperation, steal."
