Qatar- Sprinter Championship win icing on cake for Al Ghazali


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) British jockey Harry Bentley rode Arraab to Sprinter Championship glory yesterday - giving Qatari trainer Jassim Al Ghazali his sixth win of the day at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) here.

Arraab, after a tense surge in the last 300m, crossed the winning post ahead of Mutazz and Al Ghazali-trained Tuyoorna in the 1100m turf race that was worth QR114,000 to the winner.

Arraab, Al Ghazzali's six-year-old entry, clocked a time of 1:12.57, finishing just a head's length ahead of Mutazz, who had Marvin Suerland in the saddle. Tuyoorna was ridden by Stephan Ladjadj.

Minutes earlier, Al Ghazali had picked out another handsome winner in Botanica, who cornered Al Khariab Cup glory with a hard-fought win against Makruma and City Zen.

With experienced jockey Richard Mullen in the saddle, Botanica outran Makruma, who was ridden by W J Lee, and City Zen, ridden by Ladjadj, to finish with a time of 1:36.63.

It was Al Ghazali's fifth successful run of the day and his third successive winning entry in the Al Khariab Cup that was launched in 2011.

"Thank God that I got six winners today," Al Ghazali said after the final race yesterday.

"I think today's good form is for tomorrow (Thursday's) races. I had six winners, one second and two third finishes...for me everything is okay now," Al Ghazali said. "I am happy with this show."

Mullen was delighted with his win in the Al Khariab Cup win. "He (Botanica) is quite a keen horse. We just got behind the leader. I think this is as far as he wants to go," Mullen said. "It was a good performance."

It was the Briton's eighth first-place finish this season.

French jockey Cedric Segeon grabbed the headline as he rode The Scuttler to a hard-fought

win in race six at the QREC yesterday.

The Scuttler finished the QR65,000 race ahead of Sunley Pride - who was ridden by Evert Pheiffer €Ž- and River Goddess, who had Gerald Avranche in the saddle.

The Scuttler, trained by M Salama, finished with a time of 1:12:56.

Minutes earlier, the Al Ghazali-Bentley duo rocked once again as the 22-year-old British jockey rode Bayalina with a clinical finish to take race five.

Bayalina finished the 1600m race ahead of Al Koufa, who

was ridden by Mullen, and Nahla, who has Ladjadj in the saddle.

Bayalaina, who finished two lengths ahead of Al Koufa, clocked a time of 1:46:79.

In an impressive run, trainer S Ibido managed to break trainer Al Ghazali's stranglehold by watching his entry Charlie's Wish ride to victory in race four.

€ŽRidden by Marco Monteriso, Charlie's Wish finished the 1600m race ahead of Dark Leopard (Bentley) and Man Amongst Men, ridden by Segeon. Charlie's Wish finished with a time of 1:36.35.

Earlier, in the first three races of the day at the QREC, trainer Al Ghazali was the cynosure of all eyes as he headlined three successive winners.

In race three, Lieutenant Kafee emerged a runaway winner with British jockey Bentley. Trained by Al Ghazali, Lieutenant Kafee finished three lengths ahead of Mindblowing,€Ž who was ridden by J P Guillambert.

In third place was Nile Knight with jockey Avranche in the saddle.

In race two, Awattan was ridden by Bentley with confidence as the five-year-old gave Al Ghazali his second win of the day.

Awattan finished 1-and-1/4 length ahead of Inis Airc who was ridden by S Golam in the 1200m race. In third place was Golden Zephyr, ridden by Marco Monteriso.

In the first race of the day, Ladjadj €Žpowered Khafouqi to an easy win that took just 1:20:91 on the official timer.

Khafouqi won three lengths ahead of Sirat Al Naif - ridden

by Suerland - and Dheram Al Naif who had Bentley in the saddle.

Today the riders return for action on H H Sheikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Thani Day races.
