Essential Steps to Prevent Suicide

January 14 – In France a 45-y/o police chief who was tasked to investigate one of the Charlie Hebdo victims committed suicide. He shot himself just before he could submit his report. In UK an 11-year-old boy known to friends as clever and articulate overdosed on painkillers. The reason? Bullying.

“These recent suicides were unexpected and shocking. No apparent signs that two people would end up dead. I feel bad for them and their families” says Dr. Michael G. Rayel author of First Aid Tips for Suicidality: recognizing and preventing suicide in four essential steps.

USA data (2011) showed that those who are aged 45 – 54 have higher rates of suicide compared to other age groups. About 50% of those who committed suicide used firearms and the most commonly used method among males. As well suicide is the leading cause of death among the youth in both USA and Canada.

Suicide is devastating to affected families. It’s imperative that it should be prevented by reducing its risk.

Danielle Rayel says “Suicide is a complication of mental illness. It usually comes with worsening emotional symptoms. If the mental illness is recognized and promptly treated then suicide may be prevented.”

Danielle is Dr. Rayel’s co-author in the latest book First Aid Tips for Suicidality. Here they introduce the CARE approach in suicide prevention. CARE is an acronym that represents the four basic step on how to recognize warning signs of suicidality and what practical steps you can do to prevent it from happening.

“It’s crucial to acknowledge the presence of mental illness. Stresses should be addressed as promptly as possible. As well it’s helpful to observe for any change in mood and behavior. It’s necessary to clarify safety issues especially when signs of potential threat arise. Get help as soon as possible” Dr. Rayel states.

Dr. Rayel a board certified psychiatrist has written several books and educational games and products.
