(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Arabisation Centre for Medical Science (ACMLS) has translated about 50,000 medical terms from English into Arabic so far, an official said yesterday.
"The centre has already published a large number of medical and scientific records in Arabic so far," explained Dr Yacoob Ahmed al-Sharah, assistant general secretary of the ACMLS, Kuwait.
He was speaking at a workshop, organised by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) for training the local people in translating medical and science journals, documents and other records into Arabic.
The ACMLS has translated medical books of more than 200 writers from English into Arabic, translated more than 20 dictionaries of medical terms and a group of medical atlases for the readers, researchers, doctors and medical students in the Arab world.
Ahmed Abdullah al-Khulaifi, assistant secretary general, SCH said: "We have 80 to 100 attendants in the workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to link the local researchers and students with other researchers engaged in the process in the Arab world. It is a great initiative to get more information and open co-operation with the fraternity in the Arab World. Arabic students and researchers get an easy access to all the information through the works of the ACMLS."
The Arabisation Centre for Medical Science is an Arab regional organisation established in 1980 and is headquartered in Kuwait.The centre publishes medical textbooks in Arabic, a series of health education reports as well as the Arabisation of Medicine magazine, the centre's mouthpiece.
ACMLS is engaged in preparing integrated plans for Arab authorship and translation in medical fields, such as directories, encyclopaedia, dictionaries, essential surveys, for building up the Arab medical information infrastructure. ACMLS is also responsible for disseminating the main information services for the Arab medical literature. It aims to provide scientific and practical methods for teaching medical sciences in the Arab World. It also works as a link for exchanging knowledge, scientific information and researches between Arab and other cultures in all medical health fields.
